Launched in 2001, the .NAME extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domains remained online.
